Processing RGB Imagery from Skydio Drones with Pix4D Software

Skydio drones, including the X10, X10 with Skydio RTK/PPK, S2, S2+, and X2 models, are fully compatible with Pix4D software, including PIX4Dmapper, PIX4Dmatic, PIX4Dcloud, PIX4Dfields, and PIX4Dreact.

Skydio drones generate a separate CSV file that contains geolocation and orientation data for each image. This file is essential for specific calibration methods and must be processed using a specialized workflow.

Required Files for Calibration

Accurate Geolocation and Orientation (PIX4Dmapper) or Trusted Location and Orientation (PIX4Dmatic) calibration methods require the CSV file containing geolocation and orientation values.

Note: The orientation CSV file is not required for Standard calibration in either PIX4Dmapper or PIX4Dmatic.

Note: The orientation CSV file is not needed nor applicable for PIX4Dfields or PIX4Dreact, as these programs require imagery to be captured at nadir. For more information, please refer to the PIX4Dfields or PIX4Dreact Frequently Asked Questions.

Accessing the Geolocation and Orientation CSV File

After the drone completes its flight, two additional files will be available on the SD card.

  • Pix4D_Matic_geolocation.csv
  • Pix4D_Mapper_geolocation.csv

Each file is specific to either PIX4Dmapper or PIX4Dmatic, and its respective file must be used. They are not interchangeable.

Importing Files into PIX4D Software

PIX4Dmapper

To process imagery in PIX4Dmapper, import the Pix4D_Mapper_geolocation.csv file. Then, use the Image Properties Editor to link the geolocation and orientation data with the images.

For detailed instructions, please refer to the How to import/export the images geolocation and orientation - PIX4Dmapper.

PIX4Dmatic

To process imagery in PIX4Dmatic, import the Pix4D_Matic_geolocation.csv file. Then, use the Import Image Geolocation and Orientations dialog box to link the geolocation and orientation data with the images.

For detailed instructions, please refer to the How to import and export image geolocation and orientation files - PIX4Dmatic.

Note: When .jpg thermal images are processed in PIX4Dmapper, PIX4Dmatic, PIX4Dfields, or PIX4Dreact, these images are interpreted as RGB images. Consequently, the generated orthomosaic will not contain temperature values. As a result, while users can generate an orthomosaic for visualization, the temperature data associated with individual objects or pixels will not be accessible from the resulting map.
