Getting started with PIX4Dmatic 2.X for PIX4Dsurvey users

This article is for customers who currently have a PIX4Dsurvey license

With the release of PIX4Dmatic 2.0, PIX4Dsurvey has been fully integrated into PIX4Dmatic. This consolidation creates a single, powerful environment for the entire photogrammetry and CAD-ready workflow

The PIX4Dsurvey license grants access to PIX4Dmatic as of version 2.0, specifically with the PIX4Dmatic Analyst access.

The following capabilities are available:

  • Installation and usage of PIX4Dmatic 2.X.
  • Vectorization, volume calculation, CAD workflows, and enhanced terrain workflows (DTM generation and smoother contour lines) within the new PIX4Dmatic interface.
  • Access to new tools and improvements compared to the legacy PIX4Dsurvey.

What changes for PIX4Dsurvey customers?

One unified application

Until now, PIX4Dsurvey was used for:

  • Terrain workflow
  • Volume calculation
  • Vectorization
  • CAD-like outputs

Starting from PIX4Dmatic 2.0:

  • Workflow consolidation: workflows integrated into PIX4Dmatic.
  • Software Management: Installation and updates apply to PIX4Dmatic 2.X rather than PIX4Dsurvey.
  • Project Execution: All stages of project work—including processing, vectorization, analysis, and exports—take place in PIX4Dmatic

The license becomes a PIX4Dmatic license (and plan)

The current PIX4Dsurvey licenses will be compatible with PIX4Dmatic, and will subsequently be transitioned to a PIX4Dmatic Analyst license later in 2026. A new license key is not needed:

  • Users should sign in to PIX4Dmatic 2.X with the same Pix4D account used for PIX4Dsurvey.
  • PIX4Dmatic will recognize the PIX4Dsurvey license and provide PIX4Dmatic Analyst access.

Customers should contact Pix4D to transition the license to a PIX4Dmatic plan for free: [link to be shared very soon].

How to start using PIX4Dmatic 2.X

  1. Download and install PIX4Dmatic 2.X
  2. Sign in and activate
    • Launch PIX4Dmatic 2.X.
    • Sign in with a Pix4D account.
    • Your PIX4Dmatic Analyst access will be applied automatically (or select your PIX4Dsurvey license).
  3. Retain the existing PIX4Dsurvey installation (optional, for a limited time)
    • PIX4Dsurvey can be kept installed during the transition period.
    • It is recommended that new projects and recurring tasks (such as monthly volume reporting) be moved to PIX4Dmatic 2.X as soon as possible.
    • Automatic license transition to a PIX4Dmatic plan (PIX4Dmatic Analyst in this case) will start in June 2026, which will prevent the use of PIX4Dsurvey.

Where to find familiar PIX4Dsurvey tools in PIX4Dmatic version 2.X

Even if the interface looks a little different, the same concepts will be found: views, layers, geometries, measurements, and reports.

PIX4Dsurvey projects and application settings

PIX4Dsurvey projects do not automatically populate the PIX4Dmatic 2.X home screen. These files must be accessed via File > Open or by dragging and dropping the project file directly into the interface.

The application settings (default folder path, theme, proxy, etc.) will not be automatically transferred to PIX4Dmatic version 2.x, so they need to be set manually once for all future projects.

Views and navigation

In PIX4Dmatic 2.X work will typically take place in:

  • 2D view
    • Basemap (street or satellite)
    • DTM display
    • Contour lines
    • Vector layers for drawing and editing in 2D
  • 3D view
    • Point cloud visualization
    • Grid of points
    • TIN
    • Contour lines
    • Vector layers for drawing and editing in 3D
  • Image viewer
    • Edit geometries directly in the images
    • Geometry editing is more efficient than in PIX4Dsurvey, thanks to simultaneous multi‑vertex editing

Vector layers and geometry tools

The PIX4Dsurvey vector tools are available in PIX4Dmatic 2.X, with several improvements:

  • Vectorization tools
    • Points, polylines, polygons
    • Catenary and arc vectorization tools
    • Connected polygons
    • Polygon holes
    • Planar polygons
  • Measurements tools and visualization
    • Distortion‑aware measurement
    • Color by face orientation (normal)
    • Clipping box
    • Viewport layouts
  • Terrain and contours
    • Generate a DTM
    • Generate smooth contour lines from the DTM
    • Display contour lines in the 2D basemap view

These tools cover and extend the typical PIX4Dsurvey workflows (volume calculations, terrain modeling, contour export, etc.).

Reporting and exports

Reporting is more flexible in PIX4Dmatic 2.X:

  • Custom report (all PIX4Dmatic plans)
    • Includes all geometries, overview plan, and views (not only volumes)
    • Available as PDF on both Windows and macOS

Benefits for PIX4Dsurvey-only customers

Compared to working only in PIX4Dsurvey, the following gains are made:

Workflow and application benefits

  • A single application to download, install, and update.
  • A single interface to learn and train your team on.
  • Easier procurement and license management (only PIX4Dmatic license editions).

Technical benefits (PIX4Dmatic Analyst)

  • More efficient geometry editing in the image viewer (simultaneous multi‑vertex editing).
  • Custom report with all geometries, overview plan, and views.
  • PDF reports on macOS as well as Windows.
  • Generation of Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and integrated smooth contour lines.
  • 2D view with basemap, DTM, and contour lines.
  • Extra settings: distortion‑aware measurement, and face orientation visualization.
  • Enhanced polygons: connected polygons, holes, planar polygons, color by face orientation.
  • Destination selector when sharing assets to PIX4Dcloud.

Transition timeline and recommendations

To ensure a seamless transition between platforms, the following roadmap is recommended:

  1. Install PIX4Dmatic 2.X as soon as it is available.
  2. Start new projects in PIX4Dmatic 2.X instead of PIX4Dsurvey.
  3. Move recurring workflows (for example, regular stockpile volume reporting) into PIX4Dmatic 2.X well before the conversion date.
  4. Keep PIX4Dsurvey only as a fallback during the early transition, and plan to phase it out.
  5. Contact us when you are ready for us to transition your license permanently to PIX4Dmatic Analyst.

FAQ

Who is this article for?

This article is for customers who currently use only PIX4Dsurvey and will move to PIX4Dmatic 2.X. More information about the unification can be found at PIX4Dmatic and PIX4Dsurvey unification.

Do I need to buy something new?

No. Your existing PIX4Dsurvey license will be compatible with PIX4Dmatic version 2.X, and transitioned to a PIX4Dmatic plan (PIX4Dmatic Analyst) later in 2026.

Do I need a new license key?

No. Just sign in to PIX4Dmatic 2.X with the same Pix4D account you use for PIX4Dsurvey. Your PIX4Dsurvey license (or the converted PIX4Dmatic Analyst license) will be detected automatically.

Can I still use PIX4Dsurvey?

Yes, you can continue to use your existing PIX4Dsurvey installation during the transition period. However, we recommend starting new projects in PIX4Dmatic version 2.X and gradually moving your recurring workflows because license conversion will happen automatically as of June 2026.

Will my old projects still open?

Existing PIX4Dsurvey projects remain available in the currently installed version of PIX4Dsurvey. New work should be planned in PIX4Dmatic version 2.X.
