Error
PIX4Dcloud’s web user interface uploader sometimes takes significantly longer than expected to upload a dataset, fails to upload a dataset completely, or fails to start processing.
Cause
The unexpected behavior occurs when using a Chromium-based browser, e.g., Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge. Opera, Brave, etc., with a particular combination of energy-saving and resource-management settings that throttle or completely deactivate the tab or window while it’s hidden or inactive.
Solution
Regardless of the type of web browser being used, the following recommendations are recommended.
-
Adjust the browser’s energy-saving settings so it does not deactivate tabs or windows that are hidden or inactive.
-
Adjust the browser’s resource-management settings so it does not deactivate or throttle tabs or windows that are hidden or inactive.
-
Add https://cloud.pix4d.com to the browser’s energy-saving and resource-management exceptions list so it does not deactivate or throttle PIX4Dcloud while its tab or window is hidden or inactive.
- Keep PIX4Dcloud’s tab or window displayed and in the foreground until the dataset has finished uploading and processing has started so it is not deactivated or throttled by the browser’s energy-saving or resource-management settings.
Google Chrome
In the specific case of Google Chrome, the following optimizations are recommended:
Access chrome://settings/performance and:
- Energy-saving settings > Power > Energy Saver > On.
Chrome conserves battery power by limiting background activity and visual effects, such as smooth scrolling and video frame rates. > For more information, Turn Energy Saver on or off. - Resource-management settings > Memory > On.
Chrome frees up memory from inactive tabs. This gives active tabs and other apps more computer resources and keeps Chrome fast. Your inactive tabs automatically become active again when you go back to them. > For more information, Turn Memory Saver on or off. - Energy-saving and resource-management exceptions list > General > Always keep these sites active > Add cloud.pix4d.com.
Sites you add will always stay active and memory won't be freed up from them. > For more information, Personalize Chrome performance.
Microsoft Edge
In the specific case of Microsoft Edge, the following optimizations are recommended:
Access edge://settings/system and:
- Energy-saving settings > Efficiency mode > On.
Efficiency mode helps save device battery and reduce power consumption when you're browsing on Microsoft Edge. For more information, HERE. - Resource-management settings > Save resources with sleeping tabs > On.
When this is on, inactive tabs will go to sleep after a specified time to save system resources. For more information, HERE. - Energy-saving and resource management exceptions list > Never put these sites to sleep > Add cloud.pix4d.com.
This also excludes sites from other performance optimizations like discarded tabs, efficiency mode, and more.
