Import IFC and DXF for AR Visualization in PIX4Dcloud Pro

This article explains how to import IFC and DXF files into an empty project in PIX4Dcloud so they can be visualized in the web viewer and in Augmented Reality (AR) using PIX4Dcloud AR in PIX4Dcatch. These workflows rely on manual coordinate system definition and are available only with a PIX4Dcloud Pro license, which provides advanced file import and AR visualization capabilities.

Licenses: This article is valid for PIX4Dcloud Pro licenses (formerly PIX4Dcloud Advanced).

Roles: Owners, Managers, Editors and Readers can visualize IFC and DXF datasets in PIX4Dcloud.

Requirements and limitations

  • Importing IFC or DXF files into an empty project requires a PIX4Dcloud Pro license.

  • The project coordinate system must match the coordinate system of the imported file.

  • Once a coordinate system is defined, all subsequently uploaded outputs must use the same coordinate system.

  • DXF files cannot be imported directly into an empty project and require a workaround.

How to import an IFC file into an empty project (PIX4Dcloud Pro)

  1. Create a new project by selecting Upload processed outputs to generate an empty projectimage-20240229-124627
  2. In the Results page, click Set CRS to manually define the project coordinate system.
The coordinate system must match the IFC file to be imported.
    crs
  3. If no coordinate system has been defined yet, a warning message is displayed on the Results page.image-20240229-125346
  4. Upload the IFC file by clicking Upload file.upload
  5. Open the project in the viewer to visualize the IFC model, or use PIX4Dcloud AR in PIX4Dcatch to view the project in Augmented Reality.

Information: After the project coordinate system is defined, PIX4Dcloud expects all uploaded outputs to be georeferenced in that same coordinate system.

How to import a DXF file into an empty project (PIX4Dcloud Pro – workaround)

Information: Importing a DXF file directly into an empty project is not currently supported. The following workaround allows the DXF to be visualized as an overlay.

  1. Create an empty project by selecting Upload processed outputs.image-20240229-124627
  2. In the Results page, click Set CRS and manually define the project coordinate system.
The coordinate system must match the DXF file.
    crs
  3. A warning is displayed until a coordinate system is defined.image-20240229-125346
  4. Upload any IFC file (the coordinate system and content are not relevant).
This step is required only to enable access to the project viewer.upload
  5. Open the project in the viewer (only the IFC is visible at this stage).
  6. Import the DXF file as overlay.
  7. (Optional) Delete the IFC file if it is no longer needed.

  8. Open the viewer to visualize the DXF overlay, or use PIX4Dcloud AR in PIX4Dcatch to view the project in Augmented Reality.

Summary

  • IFC imports into empty projects are fully supported in PIX4Dcloud Pro.

  • DXF imports require a workaround and can only be added as overlays.

  • Correct coordinate system alignment is essential for both visualization and AR.

  • Augmented Reality visualization via PIX4Dcatch is a PIX4Dcloud Pro feature.
