Thermal Image Capture Altitude Recommendation

I've got a Flir 640x480 thermal camera (non-radiometric) 9mm lens.  Has anyone experimented with created thermal orthomosaics as far as optimum altitudes assuming you are stitching the RGB JPEGS and not stitching using R-JPEGs with the embedded radiometric pixel data?  I thought I read due to the low resolution sensor combined with the wide angle lens, it's easy to fly to low which causes issues in the stitching.
