How to generate Contour Lines based on the DTM

Video: Watch the instructional video related to DTM and Contour Lines: here.

It is possible to generate contour lines based on the DTM (Digital Terrain Model) in Pix4Dmapper:

During processing step 3. DSM, Orthomosaic and Index

The contour lines are not selected in the processing options in the default, predefined Processing Templates. Modify the options following:

1. On the Menu bar, click Process > Processing Options...
2. Select the processing step 3. DSM, Orthomosaic and Index.
3. Select the tab DSM and Orthomosaic.
4. In the section Raster DSM, make sure that GeoTIFF and Merge Tiles are selected.
5. Select the tab Additional Outputs
6. In the section Raster DTM, make sure that GeoTIFF and Merge Tiles are selected.
7. (optional) In the section Raster DTM Resolution, select the resolution of the DTM to be generated.

Tip: The default option is set to 5X GSD. This option delivers satisfactory results.
8. In the section Contour Lines, select the desired output formats (SHP, PDF, DXF).
9. (optional) Change the Contour Base [unit]Elevation Interval [unit], Resolution [cm] and Minimum Line Size [vertices] values. For more information about the contour lines options: 202558419.
10. Click OK.
11. Select step 3. DSM, Orthomosaic and Index and click Start.

After processing step 3. DSM, Orthomosaic and Index

If step 3. DSM, Orthomosaic and Index has already been processed, the DTM is generated and the DTM tiles are merged, it is possible to generate the contour lines without processing step 3 again:

1. On the Menu bar, click Process > Processing Options...
2. Select the processing step 3. DSM, Orthomosaic and Index.
3. Select the tab Additional Outputs.
4. On the section Contour Lines, select the desired output formats.
5. (optional) Change the Contour Base [unit]Elevation Interval [unit], Resolution [cm] and Minimum Line Size [vertices] values. For more information about the contour lines options: 202558419.
6. Click OK.
7. On the Menu bar, click Process > Generate Contour Lines.

Important:
  • If the raster DTM is not generated or the DTM tiles are not merged, the contour lines will use the DSM (Digital Surface Model) to be generated. In this case, generate the contour lines using the DTM while processing step 3. DSM, Orthomosaic and Index as described above.
  • If the raster DSM is not generated or the DSM tiles are not merged, the option to generate the contour lines will be grayed out. In this case, generate the contour lines using the DTM while processing step 3. DSM, Orthomosaic and Index as described above.

Note: The contour lines files based on the the DTM are stored in: ...\project_name\3_dsm_ortho\extras\contours\project_name_interval_resolution_minimum_line_size_DTM.*
