Recommendations for Hardware and Software Configuration

For a performance Desktop computer:

Due to performance/price ratio, the following are recommended:
  • O.S.: Windows 7, 8 or 10.
  • Processor: 6 core i7 CPU instead of multiple processors Xeon.
    • Single Intel Xeon does not improve the performance (sometimes it is worse), but it increases the price significantly.
    • Double Xeon processors may increase the performance for step 1 (up to 30-50% faster), but they are in the range of approx. 10'000 $ and depending on the Xeon processor, the speed may even be slower, so they are not recommended.
    • Xeon processors may be useful for processing very large datasets (more than 50.000 MB in images) depending the Xeon processor model.
  • RAM: It depends on the project size (number of images and their resolution). For most projects, 16GB is sufficient, but 32GB can be useful to process larger datasets with specific options. When processing large datasets or images of high resolution (projects with more than 1000 images or projects with images of 40 MP or more) a minimum of 32 GB RAM is recommended.
  • Graphic card: It is used for the rayCloud visualization and for GPU processing with CUDA compatible GPUs. GPU processing has an impact on step 1. Initial Processing and step 2. Point Cloud and Mesh. Any mid-range Nvidia GPU with 2-4 GB RAM is sufficient for GPU processing. CUDA compatible devices can be used for the processing of step 1. Initial Processing and step 2. Point Cloud and Mesh, but they have no impact on the rayCloud visualization. Xeon phi is not currently used.
  • Storage: A RAID setup of traditional hard disk, or a SSD are preferred.
  • CPU: Intel i7 (4-6 cores).
  • RAM: DDR4-2400 16-32 GB.
  • Hard Disk: SSD 256-512 GB.
  • GPU: Nvidia Geforce 2-4 GB.
A good machine: 
  • CPU: Intel i7 5820K (6 cores, 12 threads).
  • RAM: DDR4-2400 32 GB.
  • SSD: Crucial MX100 256 GB.
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050Ti.

A very good machine:

  • CPU: Intel i7 5960X (8 cores, 16 threads).
  • RAM: DDR4-2400 64 GB.
  • SSD: Crucial MX100 512 GB.
  • GPU: Nvidia TITAN BLACK.

Desktop examples:

  • DELL XPS-8700-se with Nvidia (quad core, 16GB, SSD, GTX): ~ 1300$.
  • HP ENVY Phoenix 810st with upgrade to hexacore (32GB, SSD, GTX): ~ 2400$.
  • Dell Alienware Area-51 with upgrade to i7-5930K, 32GB RAM, GTX 970 SLI : ~ 3500$


For a performance laptop that allows to process in the field:

Due to performance/price ratio, the following are recommended:
  • O.S.: Windows 7, 8 or 10.
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-4700MQ, Intel Core i7-3740QM. For more information:
  • RAM: 16-24GB RAM. Most workstation laptops support up to 16GB, some specific laptops support more, like Lenovo W540 series. Buying laptop and RAM separately is often much more affordable.
  • Graphic card: Integrated Intel 4400HD is enough for most projects. Discrete GPUs, like Nvidia GT series, improve the rayCloud visualization for large project. 
  • Storage: SSD prefered, or 7200RPM HDD. At least 512 GB are recommended.
Laptop example:
  • Lenovo  W540, customized with 16RAM: about 1600$ or Lenovo W540 (i7-4700QM, 24GB RAM, 512GB SSD), buying separately 2x8GB RAM, 512GB SSD: ~ 1900$.
  • HP envy (i7 4700QM, 16GB RAM, 512 HDD): ~ 1100$.
