Control application within an organization - PIX4Dcatch

Organizations can use Apple Business Manager (ABM) together with a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution to centrally deploy, update, and control iOS applications like PIX4Dcatch, rather than relying on users to manually manage updates.

Organizations can centrally manage how iOS applications are installed, updated, and used on employees’ devices by leveraging Apple Business Manager (ABM) together with a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution.

PIX4Dcatch, like any other App Store app, can be distributed and managed this way. Instead of relying on users to manually update through the App Store, IT administrators can control when and how applications are deployed.

Key Components

  • Mobile Device Management (MDM): A third-party solution that administers smartphones and tablets. MDM enforces policies such as app installation, updates, removals, and security restrictions.

  • Apple Business Manager (ABM): A free web-based portal provided by Apple that integrates with MDM solutions. ABM automates device enrollment and provides application licenses that MDM can assign to devices or users. Together, ABM and MDM allow organizations to:
    • Assign apps to specific devices or users.
    • Control app installation and removal.
    • Schedule or defer updates.
    • Revoke and reassign licenses without physical access to devices.

When managing a large number of users, combining ABM with an MDM solution is recommended for enforcing application updates and maintaining centralized control. Apple-focused MDM platforms such as Jamf Pro, Kandji, or Mosyle provide the best integration with Apple’s frameworks.

How It Works

There are two main approaches:

  1. Using MDM with ABM integration:
    • Register your organization with ABM.
    • Assign app licenses in ABM.
    • Configure the MDM solution to distribute the app.
    • Through MDM, administrators can install specific versions, remove apps, or delay updates. Users do not need to manually perform updates.

  2. Using supervised devices:
    • Supervision provides stricter management controls.
    • Administrators can fully restrict access to the App Store and enforce that all apps and updates come only through MDM.
    • While any MDM-enrolled device can have managed app updates, supervision allows deeper restrictions such as disabling the App Store entirely.

Note:

  • By default, iOS devices check the App Store for updates and either notify the user or update automatically (if enabled).
  • With ABM + MDM, organizations can take full control of when updates are deployed.
  • Apple-focused MDM solutions are recommended, as they provide the best compatibility with Apple APIs and ABM.
